Since 1860, at least 275,000 wells have been drilled in this state. Unplugged, abandoned oil and gas wells in Ohio pose significant health, safety, and environmental problems. Many abandoned wells in Ohio have little or no remaining well-head infrastructure and, as a result, continuously leak significant and harmful amounts of methane into the atmosphere. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) currently estimates that there are more than 10,000 unplugged and abandoned oil and gas wells that need to be plugged. The Well Done Foundation is launching its plugging program in Ohio to help with that task. We are working with ODNR and with experienced and talented Ohio-based contractors to plug as many of these methane-spewing wells as we can – one well at a time.
